170 pupils from 14 schools in Gateshead and County Durham came together to explore the cultural heritage of their neighbours in our region.
The children took part in workshops which introduced them to aspects of culture with Indian, Sri Lankan, French, Polish, Chinese and Japanese roots as well as traditions in North East England.

A half day event for local businesses and decision makers in North East England to reflect on EU support for jobs, investment and growth in our region.
The event will provide examples of how European funding has supported businesses in the region. Fund managers will be on hand to answer questions about the current ERDF programme which will continue to help SMEs access finance for start up and growth until 2020.
Delegates will shape a message to our elected representatives about the type of support we require to underpin our economy in a post Brexit Britain.
The event is free to attend and is organised by Europe Direct North East England with support from the European Commission.

26th September is the European Day of Languages. It is a great time to arrange fun European activities to celebrate the language and cultural diversity found across Europe.
Europe Direct North East is inviting schools to apply for a small grant to help them run a European Day of Languages event. We are awarding grants of £75, which will be given to the strongest and most innovative applications.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking to support projects/ activities which stimulate people to learn and think about different languages and cultural diversity on or around 26th September. Activities might include:
- providing language taster sessions – particularly European languages not commonly taught in UK schools
- exploring and celebrating the diversity of cultures to be found in Europe, e.g. different music, dance, costumes, traditions, etc.
- language themed quizzes and competitions.
Please note that we will not offer grants for food tasting activities
How to apply?
Applicants will be notified during the week following the deadline as to whether or not they have been successful.
Please complete and return the accompanying application form by 5pm, Friday 28th July 2017. The application needs to outline your learning objectives and must state how you will spend the grant, ( purchase of language resources, specialist teacher provision etc.)
